A few good questions

The small details.

So you know what to expect.

Do I need a scale or an NFC reader?

No. You can add filament manually, choose from the catalog, import a CSV, or use a photo. USB scales and NFC readers are optional ways to speed up your workflow.

What can a photo recognize?

Spool reads visible text on filament labels and suggests catalog matches. You review the type, color, and quantity before anything is added. Clear, well-lit labels work best. A photo cannot tell how much filament is left on a roll.

Which scales and NFC tags work?

Spool supports compatible DYMO USB HID scales and PC/SC NFC readers, including the ACR122U. Manufacturer tag support includes supported Bambu Lab, Snapmaker, and Creality tag formats; compatibility depends on the reader and tag. Create your own Spool tags with supported blank NTAG213, NTAG215, or NTAG216 tags. These are inventory tags, not replacements for a printer’s authenticated manufacturer tags.

Does Spool track printer usage automatically?

Not yet. Log usage in Spool or weigh a roll to update its remaining filament. An NFC tag identifies a spool, but it does not universally provide its current remaining weight.

Can I move between Mac and Windows?

Yes. Export an inventory backup and restore it in the other version. This is a manual transfer, not automatic cloud sync. Back up your existing inventory before restoring another file.

Where is my inventory stored?

On your computer. Inventory management and photo recognition run locally, without a cloud account. Use the app’s backup export to keep a separate copy of your collection.
